Stories of animal abuse and neglect make our hearts break and our blood boil. Often times, there is never any justice. Thankfully — in this story, the owner who severely neglected a dog was caught and arrested.
Animal services in Memphis, Tennessee received a call about a dog being kept in a backyard. Apparently, the dog had been outside and chained for a significant amount of time. They immediately went to check on the situation.
When animal services arrived at the home, they were in complete shock when they saw the condition of the dog. They were utterly devastated. The dog, named Nino, was in a dire situation. He was emaciated beyond belief.
What’s even worse is that when they went to speak with the owner of the dog — what came out of his mouth was unbelievable. He informed them that he had been away for three months and never made arrangements for anyone to watch the dog.
Completely stunned, the animal rescue team knew they had to get this dog to the animal hospital immediately. It was only a matter of time before sweet Nino wouldn’t have the strength to carry on.
When Nino was brought into the animal clinic, his emaciated body once again shocked everyone that saw him.
“Nino has zero evidence of fat on his body. He is a skeleton with skin on him. Nino is lucky to be alive today. When you talk about the worst level of starvation, that’s what we’re talking about with Nino,” Alexis Pugh, the director of Memphis Animal Services, told a Memphis news station.
The veterinary staff was feeding Nino every two hours to try and nurse him back to health. It was going to be a long road to recovery for this poor dog. He hadn’t had a real meal for at least three months.
The doctors assumed this sweet boy survived on dead animals in the backyard or possibly his own feces. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to think about — and maddening to think that someone could do this to a dog.
The police arrested the owner and he now faces felony charges.
The owner’s name is Kellen Jones and he is 27-years-old; he seemed to lack any empathy whatsoever when he was arrested for such horrible neglect. We are completely saddened and shocked by this.
“The owner told [the officer] he’d been away three months. He’d made no arrangements to have the dog cared for,” Pugh said. “The owner of Nino was very forthcoming with these details so perhaps he was unaware of his legal obligations.”
